If you’re a budding writer, there are a few things you can do to get started with creative writing. Before starting, you also need to understand the definition of creative writing and the types of literature that require creative writing.

Definition of Creative Writing

Creative writing is the process of writing a work differently from others. Creative writing is different from writing a journal, journalism, or report.

Creative writing also includes the process of expressing ideas or ideas as a form of the author’s thoughts or creative imagination, so that it becomes interesting writing for the reader.

Generally, creative writing has the aim of attracting attention and entertaining the reader. So that the manufacturing process requires the ability of the author to build the imagination of the reader.

However, creative writing is the same as any other writing. Writers need good research and writing skills, before finally being able to make creative writing.

Creative Writing Tips

Creative writing is not an easy thing, like writing a journal. The writer needs not only his skill in writing but also imagination and many other things to build his writing. The following are creative writing tips that can be applied.

1. Use the Five Senses

The first creative writing tip is to use the five senses. Indra is a physiological system in the human body to recognizes, feels and responds to a series of physical stimuli. When a sense feels something, the senses will collect information to provide perception and response.

The ability of the senses to feel something is what functions to run all aspects of cognitive, behavioral, and thought. Generally, humans have five senses, namely the senses of touch, sight, smell, hearing, and taste.

These five senses encourage readers to reminisce about their experiences, build imaginations and remember past events. Meanwhile, writers usually tend to focus on the senses of sight, touch, and hearing.

Meanwhile, the sense of taste and smell is only used by the reader to evoke his memory when reading a story. Specifically, a story that might talk about the smell of something.

2. Use the Description Technique

The next creative writing tip is to use a description technique. The description is writing that aims to give the reader an impression or impression on objects, events, ideas, and places conveyed by the author.

The use of descriptive writing techniques in creative writing aims to describe a scene. However, the writer only needs to describe the relevant scene in a different way or figurative language, there is no need to write down every detail.

This description will help the reader to imagine as expected by the author as well as explain the situation in the story.

3. Avoid Adjectives

The next creative writing tip is to avoid adjectives. Adjectives are words that change nouns or pronouns, usually, the use of these adjectives helps to describe an object, person, or other more specifically.

Adjectives are very commonly used in a sentence to form a story. But, you should avoid using adjectives in making creative writing.

4. Avoid Adverbs

The next creative writing tip is to avoid adverbs. Adverbs are words that describe verbs, adjectives, and other adverbs. There are several types of adverbs, namely adverbs of time, place, tool, condition, and cause.

But, writers are better off avoiding adverbs in creative writing. When it comes to creative writing, avoiding adverbs can help turn mundane writing into something more creative.

5. Use Nouns

A noun is a word used to express the name of a person, place, or thing. There are two types of nouns, namely concrete nouns and abstract nouns.

Concrete nouns are used for objects that can be recognized by the five senses, while abstract nouns are used for objects that can be recognized by the mind.

6. Use Similes or Metaphors

A parable or metaphor is the use of a word or group of words that does not mean anything, but an equation or comparison. A metaphor is a figure of speech that is used to express something directly in the form of an analogical comparison and omit the words like, like, and such.

Metaphors are a great way to start creative writing. But don’t let the author use metaphors in his writing excessively to make it seem cliché.

Creative writing techniques using metaphors are usually found in literary works of poetry. Because the author describes every imagination in writing using parables.

7. Create a Dialogue

Dialogue is a literary and theatrical form of a spoken or written conversation between two or more people. Dialogue is also referred to as a reciprocal conversation between two or more people in a written work.

In creative writing, the use of dialogue techniques to create a piece of writing can help readers explore scenes as if they were in the story.

In addition, the dialogue will also help readers understand the characters’ characters by showing their emotions and emphasizing their moods. So, Try using dialogue in a story.

8. Research Before Writing

Research is a process of investigation, research or observation carried out diligently and systematically. This step aims to find, interpret and revise the facts before starting to write fiction and non-fiction stories.

Even though creative writing relies on imagination, writers still need research. This research will also help the writer determine and develop his idea. So, it is important to research the topic to be raised before writing it down.

9. Better Expression of Emotions

Expression of emotions is a form of communication through changes in facial expressions and body movements that accompany emotions. Expressing these emotions is also an attempt to communicate one’s feelings when angry, sad, or happy.

But, writers should use more interesting words to express one’s emotions when writing creatively. Writers can use different ways, such as through action and dialogue.

Writers should avoid using the words “excited”, “astonished” or other words to express emotions. The writer can replace the word to express the emotion with the sentence “I like to bite my lower lip”.

10. Write Specific

One of the most important creative writing tips is that writers must make writing more specific and clear. Because more specific writing will make it easier for readers to understand it. In the end, the results of the writing will attract the attention of more readers.

11. Try Digging Ideas

An idea is an idea, the result of an author’s thoughts, experiences, or observations. Before starting to write creatively, writers must explore ideas in various steps.

If the author lacks ideas for writing, find inspiration by reading references, traveling, going on vacation, attending community events, concerts, or other things that can build your imagination.

12. Create an Attractive Title

The title is the name used for a book or chapter in a book that can briefly interpret the content or main idea in the book. In addition, the title also includes the key of a literary work, such as a story, drama, novel, or other.

Therefore, the title is very important in the creative writing process. The author must be able to determine or choose an interesting title to lure the reader from the beginning to see the title.

13. Write at the Right Time

If you’re having a hard time putting words together and getting your imagination going, try starting at a time when you can concentrate and relax.

For example, after you wake up, exercise, at night when people stop working, and so on. Because writing in busyness will be more difficult to develop ideas.

14. Don’t Make Exaggerated Stories

In addition to writing more specifically, writers are also better off not making stories that are too exaggerated. Writing that tells too much will make the reader easily bored.

On the other hand, just presenting a story that is not detailed is also disproportionate. Preferably, the writer engages the reader with different and interesting prose. Combine descriptive and dialogue writing techniques when starting to write creatively.

15. Post Correction When It’s Done

When your writing is finished, you shouldn’t be complacent. Remember, you still have to correct and revise any writing that is less precise to make it more interesting.

Try rereading and retracing the structure of the writing. If necessary, add, subtract, change language style, character deepening, themes, and other revisions.

You can also ask friends or relatives to read and correct your writing. So you will get food from the point of view of a lay reader. Below are examples of pdf creative writing worksheets that you can use as references.
