For many people, mathematics is a difficult subject. Mathematics has never been my favorite subject. Especially during this pandemic. The change in the way of teaching and learning from face-to-face to online requires the readiness of all elements. Starting from the government, schools, teachers, children, and parents, teachers conduct online learning using internet-based technology. So it will be more difficult for teachers to make children understand math lessons.
Mathematics is a science that studies quantities, structures, oblique shapes of space, and changes in a number. Mathematics for children is a learning activity about mathematical concepts through play activities in everyday life and is scientific. The purpose of introducing mathematics is so that children know the basics of learning to count/mathematics so that in time children are ready to take part in learning mathematics at the education level.
Sometimes the hardest part of math is not understanding the basics before moving on to more complex work. This can leave the child lost and confused, so math can feel like an uphill task. Once a child is left behind, it is very difficult to catch up, and children often feel like they have failed. This is where the role of the teacher in creating interesting learning.
Teachers can provide material to children with interesting media and methods, creating a conducive learning situation in the classroom. So that it creates active learning interactions even though children are currently learning from home. That way there will be a process of change in children not only in learning outcomes but also in children’s behavior and attitudes. Experts say play is an important part of the learning experience. Furthermore, they say, when we enjoy learning, we learn better.
The first step to motivating children to learn mathematics is to make mathematics understandable by putting mathematics into accessible and relevant situations. It can also be understood and associated with children. But still fun and interesting. Making math fun is the most important element in changing a child’s outlook. By showing that math is not a tough task, and math can be very flexible and fun. This will trigger the child’s interest and confidence.
Children will enjoy learning to count using a puzzle game, where you name and show the numbers in the puzzle and then invite them to say and show the numbers over and over again. After that, the children arranged the puzzle in the appropriate numbered column.
In this game, children can think logically and systematically from an early age through observing concrete objects, pictures, or numbers such as puzzles in the form of numbers. Have high accuracy, concentration, abstraction, and appreciation.
In mathematics lessons, compiling puzzles is used in the addition and subtraction of algebraic forms. In addition to helping students become motivated in learning, this game can help sharpen children’s brains, increase the activeness of learning activities at home. Filling free time can also shape children’s character in learning discipline, honesty, and curiosity. So that it fosters children’s interest in learning mathematics.
In this time of the Covid-19 pandemic, the use of educational math puzzle games in learning mathematics can provide new experiences for children. As well as with media educational games math crossword puzzles can help teachers in conveying the material. So that it is more optimally accepted by children, and can also help children understand the learning process delivered through game media. The following are some examples of math puzzle worksheets that can be studied at home during this pandemic.
